Herb Chat:

Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis)

…is used to tonify and invigorate the blood in Chinese Medicine. It is an important herb for stopping pain due to blood stasis. It is a widely used herb alone as well as in many herb formulas. It is often called the “women’s herb” because it can be very useful in fertility as well as other women’s issues, although it is commonly used in formulas used by men also. For example, it can be combined with other herbs in trauma formulas to treat traumatic injury involving pain and swelling due to sprains, torn tendons, and fractured or broken bones.

Some common uses for Dang Gui in formulas are:

- Menstrual irregularity
- Amenorrhea
- Painful periods
- Anemia
- Pallid and ashen complexion
- Brittle nails
- Hair that is dry and brittle
- Hair loss
- Dry skin
- Blurred vision
- Palpitations

Materia Medica by Dan Bensky and Andrew Gamble (1993) p. 331 state:
Dang Gui has a central nervous system effect as a mild sedative.
